Concerning Red Wine

During this afternoon’s lunch, the Cardinal next to me put ice in his glass of Merlot. His first sin was ordering the Merlot; the second sin was adding ice.

I’m sorry for being a wine snob, but it’s just wrong to add ice to red wine. Furthermore, why drink the restaurant’s house Merlot, when there was a perfectly fine Pinot available? I call those actions an abomination.

But your Holiness! I cannot believe you would admonish a cardinal for honoring Christ's first miracle? Wine to water, water to wine? And besides the favorite wine in Italy is an excellent Arneis from the Piemonte region. It is a white and will not stain vestments or table clothes. Also it will help your complexion. Red wine cause rosaceia.

Jesus turned the water into wine and the Cardinal next to you was trying to turn the wine into water....shameful!

Thank you for countering the stereotype that Germans only drink beer. If you're successful, everyone except Splunchy will know better.

In vino veritas. Or, in vino ice cube. A least he didn't put ketchup on his prime rib.

It is an Italian custom for lady's to put ice cubes in wine to weaken the beverage. To reduce its effects for obvious reasons. Even to the Pope.

Perhaps JPII finally invited a descendent of mary magdalene to join the august ranks of the cardinals? Perhaps in response to "The DaVinci" code?

Aeoliano, I think we've finally figured out a good name for our pope here... JP!!! JP- How do you like it??
As far as the wine discussion-- I hate merlot too, I prefer dry chianti, or a nice australian shiraz.

I'm so glad you're all in agreement here on the whole wine thing.

I just ordered a half bottle of Pinot from room service at the hotel I'm at right now.

You can call me JP anytime. Peace.

Pinot? Every idiot and their brother thinks Pinot "rocks" just because it was talked about at length in that movie, "Sideways." Make up your own mind about what a good wine is! Who needs a movie to tell you what to believe?!

Arugs, I loved Pinot before "Sideways." Don't be a playa hata.

I feel you. Drink whatever you like--just don't drink malt liquor or Merlot. Keep it real.

I think the question is, what would Jesus drink? Merlot? I think not.

JP? Why call him JP? He's not John Paul. He's Benedict. Get with the times.

The real sin here is adding the ice cubes to the wine.

However, I do predict a comback for Merlot. Pinot will become today's Cabernet, Shiraz/Syrah will be the new Pinot, and Zinfandel will be the new Merlot.
