Awkward Pauses in Conversation

Last night, I was having a wonderful evening with a group of Cardinals. We went out for Sushi at this little Japanese restaurant. Everything was fine until there was this awkward pause in our conversation.

I’m not sure how or why it happened, but everyone just stopped talking. It was like nobody could think of anything to say. I tried to get the conversation going by asking some questions, but nothing worked. I felt like we were all in an elevator and just staring at one another.

I ordered another Asahi and randomly talked about the trouble it took to buy my new Air Force Ones. It’s not the most exciting conversation starter, but at least I was trying.

One of the Cardinals wasn’t a fan of my new shoes and said, “it’s not appropriate for the new Pope to be sportin’ Air Force Ones.” I appreciated his bluntness, but I told him that I’ll wear these shoes whether he liked it or not. I need to represent for my peeps in the Vatican.

He nodded his head in agreement and raised his little cup of Saki to apologize. I tilted my Asahi his way and we both took a drink.

Anyway, awkward pauses in conversations always bother me, and I’m never quite sure what to do or say. I guess I should figure out an answer to this soon.

maybe you should bless them when there's a lack of conversation. i mean, you know, people like getting blessed, even if you really mean it or not.

That's true, but that only absorbs a couple minutes. I need a conversation starter to keep things rolling through the night.

Keep your mp3 with the phones handy. If nobody wants to talk to you, fuck 'em. You are NOT your brothers keeper. You get that paycheck every week whether you talk to those guys or not.

You could use those awkward pauses to come up with blog ideas. Works for me. OR, you could always break into song.
I sure wish that Cardinal at my Confirmation in 4th grade took a few pauses. That guy never shut up. Guess they don't make Cards like they use to.

Most Holy Father,

When in doubt, just start blessing people. It makes them happy and it puts you back into a position of power.

When theres an awkward pause why not start a game, like I Spy or something or a witty chap like your Holiness must know a few jokes? I bet it would get the conversation going again and if not would at least pass the time?

...or you could even take the opportunity to have a nap? With a busy schedule like yours you need to take every opportunity to rest.

I thikn you handled yourself very well. Those people should not let there be lulls that you have to cover, you're the Pope! They should always be keeping you entertained.

Your holiness,

Lulls in conversations between bishops should usually indicate that it is a good time for prayer. Perhaps reciting the rosary? And there is always a good "Our Father". The Nicean creed is always a good number because, after all, it was written by bishops.

During those awkward pauses, you could let a great big windy (fart) and atleast get everyone laughing. That will break the ice and get conversation going again.

Hey pope!!! For some reason that always happens to me too!! I mean I try to start a conversation and no one will keep the small flame going it seems like. Then, not knowing what to do I say "Soo, this is awkward." And then the other person always says "what is awkward?" then i dont know what to say back so i say something like "Oh, Nothing." and then they persist i say what i think is awkward then from there on the conversation seems to get worse and worse. So I guess what I am tring to say is don't do that. If that helps you or not i am not for sure. bye.

When we were growing up, I heard an old wives tale type saying that sudden spontaneous silences in a conversation meant a priest had died somewhere. If that's true, since you're their boss n'shit, you should probably say a few words, maybe pour a 40 on the curb for them or something.
