Do animals go to heaven?

St. Francis believed animals could go to heaven. In my opinion, I’d rather not see animals in heaven. I mean, imagine if every animal that died ended up in heaven. It would be an absolute mess up there.

How do expect to have eternal peace when you have dinosaurs and screaming monkeys roaming around? It’s called “heaven” for a reason—not a jungle.

I suppose if the animals were kept in cages—like a zoo—then things would work out up there. But I know there are some people who don’t like zoos because they feel it jails animals. I imagine those people would spend time protesting in heaven, which would get annoying after a while. So, if the zoo only kept bad animals in their cages then it could be like a prison and a zoo at the same time. That would probably appease the protestors.

But the minute you start having prisons for animals in heaven, then you need some sort of criminal court up there, and lawyers defending the animals, and a jury. It just all becomes very complicated.

So, no, I refuse to believe animals are in heaven.

If there are cats in heaven I don't think I will be there, I'd sneeze my head off. I guess I would be in purgatory with all the unbaptist babies. But then again, that would be okay with me, I don't think god is happy with me right now anyway.

There's an animal heaven and a people heaven. People from People Heaven can visit Animal Heaven if and when they'd like. I thought that you knew everything. Didn't God clue you in on this important doctrinal stance? Oh, and everyone is either vegetarian or eats manufactured meat.

Shouldn't theer be a limit on how many times someone could post on one topic? Anonymous posted three times, when one complete comment would be enough.

Sounds like stat padding to me.

Also, wh do we have to take an eye test everytime we post, that's not fair to the visually impaired and other people who have trouble seeing.

Yes, having all the animals in Heaven must present with pretty interesting logistical arrangements. For example, are there giant, self-activated pooper-scoopers or do we have to clean up after our pets for an eternity? Does St. Peter hand everyone iPods with top-of-the-line noise-blocking Bose headphones (this is Heaven, after all - no skimping) to drown out all the noise? What if we don't like the music in our heavenly-issued iPods?

Certainly something worth discussing if you ever run out of topics for sermons. You are still gainfully employed on Sunday mornings, aren't you?

Yeah, I know there's a heaven just for animals. They want to get away from us, don'tjaknow? The question I have is this: is there a cat heaven, a dog heaven, a horse heaven, etc? And do the cats get to chase mice and do the dogs get to chase cats?

Now my head is spinning.

Maybe all the animals are vegetarians in their heaven.

Your Holiness, if you believe in the Bible, then you probably believe in the story of Noah's Ark. All the animals got along on the ark. So, wouldn't it follow that the same would be true in heaven?

OK, somehow i seem to be the last person on earth to discover this blog. Hilarious! Let me tell you this: there better not be any stinking animals in heaven, pooping all over the place and begging for food. Well, except as tasty meals - we ought to have some animals for meals.

[Hey pope, could you republish your entire blog, btw (should just require a click of the button next time you post)? I'm scanning some of the early days of your blog, and while some seem to have maintained their formatting, some are looking weird. THanks.]

No where in the bible does its animals go to heaven it says they have souls but does not mention anything about them having a spirit
However God said He loves all his living creaters so why would he just let animals die
I seems kind of cruel to, what would there purpose be then, just to feed us and make us happy.
Does God not realise just how much animals have done for us specialy are pets who always bring a smile to are face specially when where down. Or those animals who save and rescue people. Or the ones who sniff out the bad guys.
You hear many miracles story about animals saving people.
If God uses animals to preform his miracles such as are pets why wouldn't he let them go to heaven.
Yes animals dont worship God nor do they think like us
but it is not there fault God made them that way
I belive that are pets have more meaning then just to keep us company( whats the point of them being on earth if they cant go to heaven)
God says he cares and loves us and all his creaters
and its seems a little crule of God to just let animals come and go as if there life was meaning less
If God loves us so much and he wants us to be happy dont you think are pets would go to heaven
God is almighty right so where in the bible does it say that heaven isn't big enough for all creaters
God can make room
Heaven is HUGE there would be plenty of room for are pets
I belive that are actions speak for are pets
If we are good to God and if we go to heaven because we are obedient
I belive are animals will go to heaven to

POPE, YOU ARE NOT OPEN MINDED, YOU HOLD MUCH FEAR. FLOWERS AND TREES ARE LOWER THEN THE ANIMALS. IMAGINE A WORLD WITH NO FLOWERS, TREES, ANIMALS.
IN GODS HEAVEN THERE IS ROOM FOR ALL, HIS/HER WORLD IS INFINATE.
EARTH IS LIKE A SMALL MARBLE.

THE BIBLE HAS HUNDREDS OF REFERENCES OF ANIMALS GOING TO HEAVEN.

POPE, WITH YOUR SMALL WAY OF THINKING, YOUR SAYING NOT ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD FROM DAY ONE WON'T FIT IN GODS HEAVEN.
GOD IS TOTAL LOVE. POPE YOU ARE THINKING OF LACK.

MAY YOUR HEART OPEN ONE DAY.
BUT THEN, THERE MIGHT NOT BE ROOM FOR YOU OR YOUR FAMILY IN HEAVEN.

I believe that animals that have been loved and treated as family members will go to heaven. The bible has several references to confirm this, but I don't have time to list them all. I don't think all animals that die will go there, just our beloved pets. There may in addition be peaceful heavenly animals already in heaven that were never on earth.

What am I supposed to say? Cat goes to the vet...cat got cancer or bowel problems she says and assistant says that she knows this cat is Christian. What? Is this absurdity? Animals are supposed to be food objects per my Bybull. Friend to man but servants. This animal domestication is an insult to humanity. But I did have that dog, Spot and I cried and cried...and then there was Pookie, Shag, etc. etc. They all broke my heart.

I dont know if animals will be in heaven or not but what i think a lot of people forget is GOD is perfect. In heaven are streets of Gold. God has prepared a place for his chosen ones.....If the animals were screaming and causing allergies and all these other problems would it realy be heaven?? IS NOTHING TO HARD FOR THE LORD? I believe No matter what even IF there are animals in heaven, there will be order... not chaos... In the ark there was no " OH HELP US LORD THE ANIMALS ARE FIGHTING EACH OTHER" there was an order set up by God The animals came TO the arc 2 by 2 they didnt have to be searched for.... The bible didnt say the animals came stampeeding to the arc or they had to be draged or even that they came fighting one another into the arc. Remember we serve a big God who can do all things above and beyond all we can do & think.

Selah..

Isaish 55:8 " For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD

As animals are the true innocents it would be downright evil if they were not given a chance of eternal happiness ... they have precious little of it in this world. Man kills everything - for fun, for "sport", for food. In this day and age there is no need to eat the flesh of other species.

Here's the "real" deal...Where is our faith? It really isn't a question of whether or not or pets go to heaven, it's a question of whether or not we have faith in the almighty to take care of what he has taken care of already for all of eternity and that is EVERYTHING...Will pets go to heaven? I'm not sure, you're not sure, we won't know unless we ask the Lord Jesus into our hearts, ask him to forgive us our sins and then live according to his word, after that when it is time for us to leave this earth, only then will we truly know and by then it won't matter much anyway as we are to be in heaven rejoicing over him...not our animal friends. While the bible isn't clear about animals in heaven, it is my belief that ALL animals fit SOMEWHERE in heaven...may be in thier own place, perhaps...the issue is to have faith that when one's pet does finally die, that we will hand it over to the Lord, having faith that wherever the pet ends up, it is only because the Lord willed it to be...and that my friends...is a good thing because he lets all things happen for good to those he loves. That said, Peace and Love.

I doubt that animals have souls. If they did, they would behave like humans. I have never seen a cat or a dog who could love, forgive and so on. Although let's reason rationally. We will never learn what our pets think. So we can't be sure that they go to heaven or not.

Hi,

This is a very interesting discussion. As the Chair of the Interfaith Association of Animal Chaplains, I decline stating definitively whether or not animals go ot heaven. I also cannot say whether or not animals have a soul. WHAT I DO KNOW IS - they love, they fear, they think, they pay attention, they feel pain, and they suffer. So, for me, the fact that animals are sentient beings is enough. God tells us in many ways and many places to care for animals. So, I do. I hope you will come and check out our website. There is a lot going on.

Yours in furry friendship,
Chaplain Nancy
